Guided Trips

We're proud to offer guided hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trips in the Medicine Bow National Forest. When you join us for a trip, our team of experienced and professional guides will take good care of you as they lead you on an adventure that you'll always remember.

All of our day trips are "build your own adventure"--meaning that you choose what trip you'd like and when you'd like it and we'll do our best to accommodate you. We can guide groups from 2-12 people and need 8 hours notice before you'd like to start your adventure.

If there's a trip you'd like simply give us a call 307-703-0172 or send Rebecca an email rebecca@laramiesbasecamp.com to start your reservation.

Medicine Bow Peak Experience (available after July 4th)
Experience Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Duration: 6 hours
Cost: $55.00/person or $40.00/person if the group is larger than 4 people

The Medicine Bow Peak is the highest peak in the Snowy Range at 12,013 feet. It is part of a rugged ridgeline that towers over several alpine lakes and forest below.

There are several different trailheads that will take you to the summit and depending on what route you'd like to take we'll start from either the Lewis Lake Trailhead which offers a very scenic hike and is 1.6 miles in duration. The Lake Marie Trailhead offers a generally more gradual, but longer climb (3.6 miles) which is just as scenic. It will also take you past an old lookout cabin. No matter what route we hike, we'll pass through some very steep sections and very rocky sections but there is hardly a spot on the trail that doesn’t offer a stunning view.

On the way to the summit, our guides will tell you the tale of a plane that once crashed into Medicine Bow Peak, the unauthorized construction of a fire lookout tower, and a brave woman who "manned" the tower alone all summer long.

For this hike, you'll need to pack a backpack with water, lunch, snacks, a rain jacket, and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, sunglasses or a hat. The altitude will be high and the sun will be bright but we know you'll have a memorable trek to the peak.

Our guides are all Wilderness First Responder certified and will pack extra gear, clothing, food, water, and first aid supplies for the group. All trips will start and end at Basecamp: 222 S. 2nd Street in downtown Laramie Wyoming and transportation will be provided to and from the trailhead. We can also accommodate hotel pickups in Laramie or Centennial for no additional fee.

Scenic Snowy Range Experience (available after July 4th)
Experience Level: Beginner

Duration: 6 hours
Cost: $55.00/person or $40.00/person if the group is larger than 4 people

Gap Lakes Trail is a local favorite for stunning vistas in the Snowy Range. This is without question one of the most scenic hikes in the Medicine Bow National Forest. We'll start our hike Lewis Lake and travel just under three miles until we reach Quealy Lake Trail. We'll walk past one alpine lake after another with the rugged Snowy Range Peaks standing tall over us and we'll be able to hike as far or as long as you'd like exploring the area.

Experience Level: Beginner/Family

Duration: 4 hours
Cost: $35.00/person or $25.00/person if the group is larger than 4 people

Hidden Falls is one of the most popular and most fun hikes at Curt Gowdy State Park. At just under 4 miles this is a hike that will take the group from the prairie to the forest, ending at a hidden waterfall tucked away amongst the boulders. Bring your camera and be prepared to soak your feet in the cold mountain water.

For this hike, you'll need to pack a backpack with water, lunch, snacks, a rain jacket, and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, sunglasses or a hat. We recommend insect repellent and water shoes like Tevas or Chacos if you plan to splash in the water.

Vedauwoo Experience
Experience Level: Beginner/Family

Duration: 4 hours
Cost: $35.00/person or $25.00/person if the group is larger than 4 people

While Vedauwoo is world famous for its wild-crack climbing the hiking isn't too shabby either. For this hike, we'll meander our way down the Turtle Rock Trail with views of the prairie, forest, and gigantic rock formations. Along the way, our guides will tell you all about the local geology, flora and fauna and historical significance of Vedauwoo to Native American tribes and early settlers.

Itinerary:

Friday, Aug. 2 or 23

Meet at 8 a.m. at Basecamp, 222 S. Second St., Laramie, WY.  Free parking is available for the weekend in the day lot (https://laramiemainstreet.org/parking). Enjoy complimentary coffee and tea at Basecamp as we fit our backpacks and sleeping bags, divide up the gear among the group and pack our packs, all while learning about gear and how to pack your pack.

Once we're all packed up we'll depart from Basecamp to North Sheep Lake Trailhead, and get to know what makes everyone so rad on the way. As we hike to our campsite for the night, the scenery will take your breath away and we'll stop often to take photographs, eat snacks and rest.

Our adventure will conclude near an alpine lake either 4 or 6 miles from the trailhead depending on how the group is feeling. Once we arrive at camp we'll take in the sites near the lake, enjoy a delicious meal, and enjoy the company of new friends as we relax at the campsite.

Saturday, Aug 3 or 24

We'll wake up to the sound of birds chirping as we enjoy our morning coffee, tea, or hot chocolate surrounded by scenic vistas.

When we're ready we'll break camp and re-pack our packs for the day. Maybe you’ll find an easier way to pack!

There's no rush our second day, we'll hike 2-4 miles depending on how the group is feeling before we set up camp and enjoy our second night in the wilderness near another high alpine lake.

A delicious dinner will be served and we'll enjoy each other’s company, and learning new things about nature during a relaxing evening under the stars.

Sunday, Aug. 4 or 25

On Sunday morning we'll enjoy a leisurely breakfast before breaking camp. We'll take in the scenery on our last morning together as we head back to the North Fork trailhead 3-5 miles down the trail.

Once we reach the trailhead we'll celebrate with cold drinks, delicious sandwiches and fresh fruit as we drive back to Laramie. After turning in our gear at Basecamp we'll say "good-bye" and "see ya later". We'll plan on being back in Laramie by 3pm.

*Please note that we want everyone of all fitness abilities to be comfortable on this trip. There are several scenic campsites along the way so depending on the pace of the group the entire distance covered will be between 10 and 16 miles.
